Description

PHO Grand Rounds: Training to Enhance Disaster Recovery Efficacy Among Public Health Workers Post-Hurricane Sandy: A Mixed-Methods Impact Assessment

This research presentation will describe qualitative and quantitative impacts of a novel evidence-informed curriculum, Public Health System Training in Disaster Recovery (PHSTriDR). This is the first known curriculum explicitly designed to address and enhance public health workers' sense of efficacy toward disaster recovery. In the face of an ever-broadening array of emergent public health threats, this work provides significant and timely new insights into disaster recovery activities for public health. This program also provides training approaches to boost public health workers' sense of confidence in performing them effectively. The presentation will include data, including previously unpublished findings, on the various ways in which this training boosts such confidence among public health workers. This research was based on a study of Hurricane Sandy recovery perceptions among US local public health workers in New Jersey and Maryland. International implications of this work, including for Canada, will be discussed.
